Grey Falcon Collection

The Grey Falcon (Falco hypoleucos) is a species of raptor found in Australia, New Guinea and Indonesia and has a grey-brown back, white underparts and a black head with yellow eyes. Its wingspan can reach up to 1.2 metres and it weighs between 500-800 grams. The Grey Falcon feeds mainly on small mammals such as rodents, rabbits, hares and reptiles but also takes birds, insects and carrion when available. It hunts by soaring high above its prey before swooping down to capture it with its talons. Breeding usually occurs during the dry season when food is more abundant; the female lays 2-3 eggs in an unlined nest made from sticks located on cliff faces or large trees. The Grey Falcon is listed as Near Threatened due to habitat destruction caused by human activities such as mining and logging which have reduced the availability of suitable nesting sites for this species.
