The European Honey Buzzard (Pernis apivorus) is a species of bird in the Accipitridae family, and is found in most of Europe, parts of Asia and Africa, and occasionally as far as Australia, wingspan of up to 1.5 metres and can weigh up to 1 kg. Its plumage is mainly brown with white patches on its wings and tail, while its head is grey-brown with a white throat patch. It feeds mainly on insects such as bees, wasps and hornets which it captures by hovering over them before swooping down for the kill. During breeding season it builds large nests high in trees or on cliffs where it lays 2-3 eggs which hatch after about 4 weeks incubation period by both parents. The European Honey Buzzard plays an important role in controlling insect populations making it an important species for conservation efforts across its range.
