Bateleur Collection

Bateleur (Accipitridae Accipitriformes) is a species of eagle found in Africa, the Middle East, and India, and is a medium-sized raptor with long wings and a short tail. The adult Bateleur has blackish-brown upperparts and white underparts with chestnut patches on the sides of its breast. Its head is small, with yellow eyes and a black bill. Its legs are yellow or orange in color. In flight, it has an unmistakable silhouette due to its long wings that are held at an angle when soaring or gliding. Bateleurs feed mainly on small mammals such as hares, rodents, birds, reptiles and insects which they hunt from perches or while soaring over open country. They also scavenge carrion when available. They nest in trees or on cliff ledges where they lay one to three eggs each year which hatch after about 45 days of incubation by both parents who also share in feeding the young until they fledge at around 10 weeks old.
