Western Toad Collection

The Western Toad (Anaxyrus boreas) is a species of Nearctic toad found in western North America, and is the most widespread toad species in the region, ranging from Alaska and British Columbia south through California and into Mexico, wide variety of habitats, including forests, grasslands, deserts, and wetlands. Its coloration varies depending on its environment; it may be grayish-brown or reddish-brown with small dark spots on its back and can reach lengths of up to 4 inches (10 cm). The diet of the Western Toad consists mainly of insects such as beetles, ants, flies and spiders. Breeding takes place during spring or early summer when males congregate around ponds or other bodies of water to call for mates. Females lay eggs in long strings which hatch into tadpoles after several days. After metamorphosis they become juvenile toads that will reach adulthood within two years. The Western Toad is an important part of many ecosystems as both predator and prey; it helps keep insect populations in check while providing food for larger animals such as birds and snakes.
