The American Toad (Anaxyrus americanus) is a species of Nearctic toad found in North America, and is one of the most widespread and abundant amphibians in the region, inhabiting woodlands, meadows, wetlands and other habitats, wide variety of colors ranging from grayish brown to olive green with dark spots on its back and has a white or yellow belly with red or orange warts along its sides. The average adult size ranges from 2-4 inches in length and can live up to 10 years in captivity. They feed on insects, spiders and other small invertebrates which they catch using their long sticky tongues. Breeding usually occurs between April and June when males call for females by producing loud trills from their vocal sacs located beneath their chins. After mating, female toads lay up to 20,000 eggs which hatch into tadpoles within days before eventually transforming into adults after several weeks or months depending on environmental conditions such as temperature and food availability.
