Greater Siren Collection

The Greater Siren (Siren lacertina) is a species of aquatic salamander found in the southeastern United States, and is the largest species of siren, reaching up to 30 inches in length, and are typically dark brown or black on top and lighter underneath, with two rows of yellow spots down their back. They have external gills that are used for breathing underwater and four toes on each foot. Greater Sirens live in shallow freshwater habitats such as swamps, marshes, ponds and lakes where they feed on insects, crustaceans and small fish and can remain underwater for several days at a time by burying themselves in mud or leaf litter until conditions become favorable again. These amphibians are considered vulnerable due to habitat destruction from human activities such as pollution and development. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this species from further decline.
