Exeter Change by Charles Robinson

A visit to the menagerie at Exeter Change, one of the many picturesque buildings in the Strand destroyed by road widening in 1830. Built on the site of St. Clement Dane's rectory by William Cecil, Lord Burleigh, in 1600, it was originally called Exeter House. Nash, the architect, planned to replace it by a similar bazaar, but instead the Lower Arcade between Adelaide Street and the Strand was constructed. Coutts Bank now stands approximately on the site depicted here. Date: 1951

Fishermen row a boat in the knee-deep Neijing River near the city of Honghu in central China's Hubei Province May 30, 2011. The river is normally many metres deep at this time of year, but local fishermen say its the lowest they have seen it in 70 years. Almost 35 million people across five provinces on the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze have been affected to different degrees by the drought, the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs said last week. Farmers said they would need generous rainfall in coming weeks, or the first of their two annual rice crops could wither and die, and more of the thousands of fish and crab farms could lose all their stock. Millions of farmers in Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi and other provinces face similar threats of damaged or even lost rice crops. Picture taken May 30, 2011.
