Luna orbiter Featured 17 Dec 2008 Print

Luna orbiter

Luna orbiter. Model of a Luna 10 spacecraft orbiting module. This Soviet unmanned spacecraft was first launched during the Luna 10 mission in March 1966. It was the first man-made object to go into orbit around another planetary body. The same design was also used for the Luna 12 mission, launched in October 1966. Both Luna 10 and 12 spacecraft carried instruments used to study the Moon, transmitting data back to Earth on the Moon's magnetic field, and the composition of its rocks
