General Benjamin Henry Grierson, Union cavalry general, 1862-1867. In 1863 Grierson (1826-1911) commanded the operation known as Grierson's Raid, an 800 mile long advance deep into Confederate territory that formed part of General Ulyssess Grant's Vicksburg campaign. After the Civil War he organised and commanded the 10th Cavalry, one of two regiments comprised of black enlisted men and white officers popularly known as the Buffalo Soldiers. John Alexander Logan, Union soldier and politician, 1862-1867.Artist: J Rogers

John Alexander Logan, Union soldier and politician, 1862-1867. A member of the US House of Representatives before the Civil War, Logan (1826-1866) served as a general in the Union Army during the war, winning the Medal of Honor for his role in the capture of Vicksburg in 1863. After the war he resumed his political career, initially in the House of Representatives before later becoming a Senator for the state of Illinois. He ran unsuccessfully for Vice President in 1884.
