George Henry Thomas, Union general, 1862-1867. One of the principal Union commanders in the western theatre of the Civil War, Thomas (1816-1870) earned the nickname the Rock of Chickamauga for the defensive stand by his men at the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863 that prevented a rout. John Alexander Logan, Union soldier and politician, 1862-1867.Artist: J Rogers

John Alexander Logan, Union soldier and politician, 1862-1867. A member of the US House of Representatives before the Civil War, Logan (1826-1866) served as a general in the Union Army during the war, winning the Medal of Honor for his role in the capture of Vicksburg in 1863. After the war he resumed his political career, initially in the House of Representatives before later becoming a Senator for the state of Illinois. He ran unsuccessfully for Vice President in 1884.
