Combination picture shows the phases of an annular solar eclipse as seen from Segovia
This combination picture of five pictures shows the phases of an annular solar eclipse as seen from Segovia in central Spain October 3, 2005. An annular eclipse differs from a total eclipse in that the moon appears too small to completely cover the sun. As a result, the moon is surrounded by an intensely brilliant ring or annulus formed by the outer perimeter of the sun's disk. The last annular eclipse visible from Spain took place on the 1st of April 1764 and the next one will occur on the 26th of January 2028. REUTERS/Victor Fraile - RP2DSFHZDWAA

Obelisk of Luxor and the Place de la Concorde, 1891. Artist: Emmanuel Lansyer
Obelisk of Luxor and the Place de la Concorde, 1891. The obelisk, 22.83 meters high and weighing 230 tons, which marked the entrance to the Amon temple at Luxor, was installed in 1836. Hittorf completed the decoration of the place between 1833 and 1846. The obelisk is at the center of an oval whose two centers are fountains constructed at the same period. At each corner of the octagon is found a statue that represents one of the large French cities: Lille, Strasbourg, Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, Nantes, Brest and Rouen. Lansey painted this panel for the Salon de Lettres in the l'Hotel de Ville, Paris

The Port of Cordelieres and Castle Loches, 1891. Artist: Emmanuel Lansyer
The Port of Cordelieres and Castle Loches, Touraine, France, 1891. Built on a rocky outcrop (on the site of a Gallic oppidum) the chateau towers over the town and its outer walls conceal a beautiful medieval city. The heir apparent to the throne, Charles, took refuge there and then came the historic moment when Joan of Arc begged him to go to Reims to be crowned king. Once he had become Charles VII, he went back to the chateau with his Damoyselle de Beaute, Agnes Sorel, the first official mistress of a king of France. Louis XI enlarged the fortress and made it a state prison, while Louis XII built the second wing of the Royal Residence, on the northern wing of the outer wall, which contrasts with the southern wing, which looks more feudal with its turrets, watchtowers, and its parapet
