Tawny owl peering out of a tree
Tawny owl (Strix aluco) peering out of a tree. This nocturnal predator, which is distributed in forests and sparse woodland across much of Eurasia, is Britain's most common owl. It hunts at night, finding its prey by sound and then swooping down onto it rapidly. It feeds mainly on small mammals such as mice and voles, although it also takes smaller birds, frogs and insects. It may reach a length of up to 40 centimetres. The characteristic "twit-twoo" call is emitted by this bird, although the "twit" is actually the female call which is then answered by the male "twoo" call

Slot canyon
MODEL RELEASED. Slot canyon with a potholer looking up at sunlight streaming through into the interior. Slot canyons are formed by flash flood water from occasional thunderstorms in arid areas. The water exploits cracks in the sandstone, forming deep canyons over thousands of years. The abrasive power of the water comes from the sand particles it carries. Photographed in Arizona, USA
