Statues and moat at the Southern Gateway to Angkor Thom Cambodia 2n

Angkor Thom, Cambodia - 19 January 2005
A triumph of Medieval Khmer culture, the treasures of Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom in Cambodia are incomparable. Angkor Thom (Great City) was the last and most enduring capital city of the Khmer empire. It was established in the late twelfth century by King Jayavarman VII. Many of its temples were submerged by tropical forest for centuries, and trees continue to shatter and pierce the ruins. This imposing bridge, guarded by a statues and moats, is at the southern entrance to the city, seen at sunrise

Beach-goers take a stroll on quiet Kamala beach in the tsunami-hit tropical island of Phuket on January 20, 2005. Talk of "new beginnings" is all the rage in Thai tourism circles at the moment, but for all the good intentions, efforts to smarten up resort areas and rid them of sleaze and grime look likely to fail. The Indian Ocean tsunami swept away more than 5,000 Thais and tourists on Dec. 26 during the peak season of a country that attracted about 12 million holiday makers last year.
