The backbone or spine runs down the back of the body from the base of the skull to the pelvis. The ribcage (centre) is comprised of twelve pairs of curved ribs that attach to the spinal column at the back and to the sternum at the front. The large bones seen behind the rib cage are the scapulae or shoulder blades
