Artwork illustrating human lymphatic sytem Featured 27 Sep 2004 Print

Artwork illustrating human lymphatic sytem

Artwork illustrating the human lymphatic system, a network of vessels that carries lymph (water, proteins, electrolytes) from the tissue fluids to the bloodstream. At intervals along the length of lymphatic vessels are swellings (nodes); groups of nodes are found in the groin, neck, armpit and behind the ear. The nodes function to "filter" lymph through the action of scavenging macrophages & prevent foreign particles from entering the bloodstream. They are also sites of storage & proliferation of both B- and T-lymphocytes, white blood cells involved in the immune response to infection

Northeast Scotland. True-colour satellite image of northeast Scotland, Great Britain, centred on the Grampian mountains. North is at top. Cities seen here include Edinburgh (at bottom centre), Glasgow (at bottom left), Dundee (at lower right), and Aberdeen (at upper right). The Grampians form part of the Scottish Highlands, and contain the Cairngorm range of mountains which here appear snow-covered at upper centre. The sea inlets of the Firth of Forth and Moray Firth are at lower centre and top left respectively. Image taken by a Landsat-5 satellite
