AFP PHOTO FREDERICK FLORIN

Mammoth bone hut
Mammoth bone hut. Archaeologists inside a reconstruction of a hut made from bones and tusks of the woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius). The walls of the hut are almost entirely composed of mammoth bones, supported by a framework of wooden branches and supporting struts. This hut dates from between 45, 000 and 10, 000 years ago in the Palaeolithic period (Stone Age). It was found in Mezhirich in the Ukraine. The archaeologists are using mammoth bones as percussion instruments, as they believe the original inhabitants of the hut would have done. Photographed in 1976

Large water lilies, Nymphaea
A large colony of flowering water lily, Nymphaea sp., on the surface of a lake. The leaves and flowers of water lilies rise from a thick rootstock, held securely in the mud at the bottom of the shallow lake by long, tough roots. The leaves are round or heart-shaped with a shiny, leathery upper surface. They float on the surface of the water, except where overcrowding forces them upward.
