Spider mouthparts, SEM
Spider mouthparts. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the mouthparts of a house spider (Tegenaria sp.). The head of the spider is at upper centre. Several pairs of eyes (round) are on top of its head. Below these are the chelicerae (large pincers), ending in poison fangs (orange, lower centre) that are used to paralyse its prey, mostly insects or other small invertebrates. Either side of the head and extending forwards to bottom centre, are the two pedipalps. These are sensory structures used for manipulation, such as during feeding. The tops of two legs are at lower right and left. Magnification: x20 when printed 10cm high
