Artwork of shepherd moons in Saturns ring plane

Artist's impression of shepherd moons in Saturn's ring plane. The rings of Saturn are in reality thousands of concentric rings, like grooves on a gramophone record. They are made of billions of ice & rock particles ranging from a few centimetres to hundreds of metres across. Within the rings are larger rocks, small moonlets known as "shepherd" moons because their gravity & motion maintain the concentric nature of the ring system. Without these "shepherds", Saturn's rings would have lost their form millions of years ago. The shepherd moons were one of the discoveries of the Voyager spacecraft mission

Vitamin B1 Featured 27 May 2003 Image

Vitamin B1

Vitamin B1. Computer model of a molecule of vitamin B1 (thiamine, C12.H17.N4.O.S), a water- soluble vitamin. The atoms (solid tubes) of this organic molecule are colour-coded: oxygen (red), carbon (yellow), hydrogen (grey), nitrogen (blue) and sulphur (green). Thiamine is important for the normal function of the heart, muscles and nervous system, as well as normal growth and development. Flour, beans, pork and salmon provide thiamine. An excessive deficiency of thiamine can result in the disease beriberi. Small amounts of vitamins are an essential part of a healthy diet, providing enzyme cofactors for the varied biochemistry of body metabolism
