Globular cluster M80 Featured 23 May 2003 Print

Globular cluster M80

Globular cluster M80. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of the globular star cluster M80 (NGC 6093). This massive star cluster lies some 28, 000 light years away in the constellation Scorpius. M80 contains hundreds of thousands of stars. Stars in globular clusters all form at about the same time. This makes them useful for the study of stellar evolution, as the stars differ only in their masses. These stars are around 15 billion years old. Some stars with a mass similar to our Sun have developed into the bright red giants (orange) seen throughout this cluster. Image taken on the 1st July 1999

Coloured X-ray of human spine with osteoporosis Featured 23 May 2003 Print

Coloured X-ray of human spine with osteoporosis

Osteoporosis of the spine. Computer-enhanced X- ray of vertebrae of the spine in a patient suffering osteoporosis. Vertebral bones (orange) are seen cushioned between intervertebral discs (blue). Here, vertebral bones appear wedge-shaped due to decreased bone density which has led to bone compression. The vertebra at upper right is severely compressed, with bending of the spine. Compression of the bones in osteoporosis can cause severe pain, spinal curvature and loss of height. Osteoporosis (brittle bone disease) is most common and severe in post-menopausal women due to low oestrogen hormone levels which help to maintain bone mass. Hormone therapy (HRT) is a treatment
