Artwork depicting MFEX rover on Mars

Mars rover. Artist's impression of the Micro-rover vehicle "Sojourner" on the surface of Mars. Sojourner will be carried to Mars by the Mars Pathfinder spacecraft, seen here in the background in late 1996. The rover weighs about 9kg, is 63cm long and 48cm wide. It is powered by a solar panel which will allow for a few hours movement per day, and is controlled by an operator on Earth. The main objective of Sojourner is to study rocks on the surface of Mars. To this end it carries an alpha-proton X-ray spectrometer (APXS) and a high-resolution camera. Sojourner will also provide extensive engineering data toward the design of future planetary rover vehicles

The New Zealand born physicist Sir E. Rutherford

The New Zealand born physicist Sir Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937). The photograph was taken to commemorate the Nobel Prize for chemistry which he received in 1908. Rutherford may be considered the father of nuclear physics for his studies on radioactive decay and the atomic structure. He identified three types of radiations produced by radioactive decay which he called alpha, beta and gamma rays. In 1911 he proposed an atomic model in which the positive charge of the atom (protons) was concentrated in a very small region, the nucleus. He also showed that the structure of an atom could be changed (nuclear transmutation) by bombarding it with alpha particles
