Interacting galaxies
Interacting galaxies. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of the interacting spiral galaxies NGC 2207 (left) and IC 2163 (right). IC 2163 grazed the larger galaxy some 40 million years ago, which distorted its spiral shape. A long streamer of dust and stars has been ejected from IC 2163 (centre right). IC 2163 lacks the energy needed to escape this interaction, and these galaxies will eventually merge in many millions of years. They lie around 114 million light years from Earth in the constellation Canis Major. Data for this image was collected by the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 on the HST in May 1996 and November 1998

Waterloo Station, SR poster, 1948
Poster produced for Southern Railways (SR). This is one of two posters commissioned as part of the celebrations that took place in 1948 to mark the centenary of the opening of Waterloo Station. The poster commemorates a centenary of uninterrupted service during war and peace'. Artwork by Helen McKie (d 1957), who studied at the Lambeth School of Art and exhibited at the Paris Salon and at leading London galleries. In addition to designing posters for SR, she also wrote and illustrated booklets and other publicity material and designed uniforms and upholstery. In 1939 she was asked to decorate two new coaches for the cross-Channel service. Dimensions: 1016 mm x 1270mm
