Artwork of heart & ECG trace in heart failure
Heart failure. Cutaway illustration of a human heart and an ECG (electrocardiogram) trace in left ventricular heart failure. The trace shows cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), a major cause of heart failure. Heart failure occurs when the heart fails to empty itself completely with each contraction. In left ventricular failure the left ventricle (right) is responsible. As a result its muscular wall becomes abnormally enlarged and a backflow of pressure occurs against the pulmonary vein, causing the lungs to become congested with blood. Symptoms include pulmonary oedema, shortness of breath and fatigue. Short-term treatment includes bed-rest and diuretic drugs

Coloured SEM of skeletal (striated) muscle fibres
Skeletal muscle. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of skeletal muscle fibres. Muscle fibres are extremely long, cylindrical cells. Running the length of each fibre are thin threads called myofibrils. The myofibrils contain the proteins actin and myosin, which slide over each other to allow the muscle to contract. These proteins give the fibres a banded appearance, and skeletal muscle is also called striated muscle due to this. It is also called voluntary muscle, as it is under direct conscious control. Magnification unknown
