East Coast Joys No 2 - Sun-bathing, LNER poster, 1931 Featured 19 Feb 2003 Print

East Coast Joys No 2 - Sun-bathing, LNER poster, 1931

Poster produced by London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote rail travel to the East coast of England. This poster, entitled Sun Bathing, was second in a series of six posters illustrating the various pastimes that could be enjoyed on the east coast. The posters formed a continuous scene when placed next to each other, but each was designed so that it could also stand alone. Artwork by Tom Purvis (1888-1957), who rallied for the professionalisation of commercial art. In 1930 he was one of the group of artists who founded the Society of Industrial Artists, which campaigned for improved standards of training for commercial artists in order to broaden their scope of employment

The Tay Bridge, BR poster, 1957 Featured 19 Feb 2003 Print

The Tay Bridge, BR poster, 1957

Poster produced for British Railways (BR) to promote rail travel to and within Scotland. The poster shows a locomotive travelling over the Tay Bridge, with the waters of the Firth of Tay streching out on either side. To produce the preliminary drawings for this painting, the diesel locomotive and train were posed for the artist. Winds of up to 40mph blew through the girders of the Tay Bridge as he sketched the scene. Artwork by Terence Cuneo, son of the artists Cyrus and Nell Cuneo. He studied at the Chelsea and Slade Art Schools and in addition to a long career designing railway posters, he also painted portraits (including royal portraits) and ceremonial and military subjects
