Artwork of bio-artificial kidney filter fibre
Bio-artificial kidney. Computer artwork of a single fibre of a bio-artificial kidney filter device. The hollow fibre (yellow) has an extra- cellular matrix (blue) and is lined with a one- cell layer of cultured endothelial cells (pink tube). Blood pressure forces metabolic wastes (yellow diamonds) and water molecules (blue spheres) out of the pores (holes) of the fibre. The larger protein molecules (brown folded) are retained. This filter device was developed by David Humes and his team in Michigan, USA. Professor Humes founded the company Nephros with the goal of creating from cultured cells the first bio-artificial kidney
