SUN SETS OVER JIMBARAN BAY ON THE RESORT ISLAND OF BALI

The sun sets over Jimbaran Bay on the resort island of Bali August 13, 2003.
Last year's deadly bombing attacks dealt a body blow to a tourist industry
that provides a livelihood for 70 percent of the 3 million people living on
this island of surfing beaches and lush rice paddies. In the first half of
this year, only 411,864 tourists came to Bali, down 39.77 percent from the
683,765 in the same period last year, according to Indonesia's bureau of
statistics. In 2002, 1.35 million tourists came to Bali. NO RIGHTS CLEARANCES OR PERMISSIONS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS IMAGE

Artwork of the Cassini spacecraft near Titan Featured 13 Aug 2003 Print

Artwork of the Cassini spacecraft near Titan

Cassini/Huygens spacecraft. Artwork of the Cassini spacecraft releasing the Huygens probe (bottom right) over Titan, one of the moons of the ringed planet Saturn. The dish-shaped Huygens probe will enter the atmosphere of Titan at a speed of about 22, 000 kilometres per hour. Using parachutes to slow itself down, Huygens will carry instruments down to Titan's surface and broadcast data for up to 30 minutes. Cassini will orbit Saturn for four years, and will study the planet, its rings, and its moons. Cassini was launched in October 1997 and is expected to reach Saturn in July 2004. The Huygens probe will enter Titan's atmosphere in November 2004

Nerve cells from cerebral cortex Featured 13 Aug 2003 Print

Nerve cells from cerebral cortex

False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of neurones (nerve cells) from the cerebral cortex - the outer, heavily folded, grey matter of the brain. Neurones exist in varying sizes & shapes throughout the nervous system, but all have a similar basic structure consisting of a central cell body & 2 types of processes: a single axon (a nerve fibre) which is the effector part of the cell that terminates on other neurones (or organs), and one or more dendrites, smaller processes that act as sensory receptors. In the cerebral cortex, neurones of comparable structure are arranged in a variable number of layers. Magnification: x240 at 35mm, x480 at 6x7cm size
