Coloured MRI scans of human brain (multiple views) Featured 30 Apr 2003 Print

Coloured MRI scans of human brain (multiple views)

Brain scans. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans through a human head showing a healthy brain. Multiple sections through the head are seen. At top and bottom are sagittal "slices" in which the head is seen in profile. At top right and upper left are axial (horizontal) "slices" with the eyes and nose also seen. At lower left are two coronal "slices" vertically through the head from ear to ear. In each scan the folded brain can be seen. MRI scanning uses a powerful magnet and radio waves to create "slice" images through the body. The technique is useful in imaging soft tissues of the brain and body

Genomics Featured 30 Apr 2003 Print

Genomics. Conceptual computer artwork of an anatomical model of the human face with a DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) helix (across bottom) and three molecular models (upper right). This may represent genomics, the process of determining the sequences of genes in the human genome (the information that controls and transmits an organism's hereditary characters). The sequence of DNA's nucleotide bases (G, C, A, T), arranged in discrete segments known as genes, determines the genetic code. Each gene encodes instructions for the construction of molecules like proteins. Sequencing the genome allows identification of the genes responsible for genetic diseases
