Sunspots and granulation. Coloured imageof a sun- spot group (dark markings) and solargranulation. Each sunspot has a dark core, the umbra, and a lighter, filamented periphery, the penumbra. Sunspots are caused by intense, localised magnetic fields which inhibit the flowof heat from the interior. The bright granules arethe tops of currents bringing hot gas to thesurface. Formula One World Championship: Jacques Villeneuves, Williams Renault FW19, tactic of slowing down the field during the opening laps came

Jacques Villeneuve's (CDN), Williams Renault FW19, tactic of slowing down the field during the opening laps came undone when he was overtaken by the Ferrari F310B of Eddie Irvine (GBR) who soon built up a commanding lead. Irvine eventually finished third while Villeneuve was fifth. Villeneuve was subsequently excluded from the event after racing under appeal.
