Cryptosporidium protozoa, TEM Featured 12 Aug 2002 Print

Cryptosporidium protozoa, TEM

Cryptosporidium protozoa. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Cryptosporidium sp. (centre left) on the surface of the intestines. This is the protozoan's sporozoite stage, which attaches to the intestinal mucosa before penetrating the epithelial cells. This causes the disease cryptosporidiosis, with symptoms including impaired digestion, diarrhoea and fever. It is contracted by drinking water or eating food that has been in contact with the faeces of an infected individual. In immunocompromised individuals, such as those suffering from AIDS, the disease can be fatal. Magnification: x2400 at 6x7cm size

TEM E.Coli Featured 12 Aug 2002 Print

TEM E.Coli

False colour transmission electron micrograph of the bacterium Escherichia coli, a normal member of human intestinal flora. Under certain conditions it becomes harmful, causing infection in the intestinal or urinogenital tracts. The micrograph shows the bacterium dividing into 2 daughter cells by the process of binary fission. The red areas highlight the nucleic acid or DNA, which carries the genetic information. The DNA lies in the bacterial cytoplasm & is not bound by a separate membrane. As experimental laboratory organisms, E. coli bacteria have played a major role in the development of genetic engineering. Mag: x26, 775 at 10cm tall. Microcosmos P.96 fig.5.16
