Deer tick, SEM Featured 29 Aug 2001 Image

Deer tick, SEM

Deer tick. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a deer tick (Ixodes ricinus), a bloodsucking parasite of animals and humans. Its sensory pedipalps (lower left) are seen shielding its specialised mouthparts, which are used to pierce the host's skin. Hairs on the pedipalps locate the host by detecting air-borne vibrations. Ixodes sp. can transmit Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that cause Lyme disease. This disease is characterized by fever and joint inflammation. Magnification: x55 at 6x7cm size
