Eskimo nebula

Eskimo nebula. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of the Eskimo planetary nebula (NGC 2393). Planetary nebulae are formed when a Sun-like star ejects its outer layers at the end of its life. These form bubbles of gas illuminated by the dying star's radiation. This star (centre) began ejecting matter around 10, 000 years ago, and the fastest material is travelling at 1.5 million kilometres per hour. The Eskimo nebula is 5000 light years from Earth. This image was taken by the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 on the HST on January 10-11th 2000, the first image taken after the HST's December 1999 repair mission
