Fossilised crab in a mudstone deposit
Fossil crab in a mudstone deposit. Crabs belong to the Decapoda order of the subphylum Crustacea. Crabs first appeared in the Jurassic period (195- 136 million years ago), making them the last of the crustacean groups to appear. Although rare in Jurassic deposits, crabs subsequently increased in numbers and diversity, and are still in full evolutionary development. Photograph of a fossil from Australia
