Artwork of an Ariane 5 rocket deploying a payload

Ariane 5. Artwork of an Ariane 5 rocket deploying its payload during a mission to supply the International Space Station (ISS, not seen here). The Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV, at top) has become exposed as the protective Ariane nose cone falls away. The ATV is an unmanned craft which will be used to carry logistical supplies such as food, air and equipment on a regular basis to the ISS. Both Ariane 5 and the ATV are European spacecraft, as is the Crew Transfer Vehicle (CTV) which the rocket can carry when new personnel are needed on the space station. The ISS is due to be operational in June 2002

Drawing of the steam engine invented by Hero Featured November Print

Drawing of the steam engine invented by Hero

First steam engine. Drawing of the first-ever steam engine or Aeoliphile, designed by the Greek engineer Hero of Alexandria (flourished 1st century AD). The vessel in the lower frame was filled with water which was then heated. Steam from the vessel travelled up the two tubes supporting the hollow sphere at upper centre. Two jets of steam escaped from bent tubes in the side of the sphere, making it rotate because of the law of action and reaction. Although this was the first steam engine, it was very inefficient and remained a novelty. The first practical steam engines appeared in the early 18th century. Hero's engine was described in his Pneumatics
