Stellar sea lions
Sea lions. A group of Northern or Stellar sea lions, Eumetopias jubata, on a rocky shoreline. Sea lions are carnivorous marine mammals which come ashore only to reproduce and molt. Their limbs have evolved into flippers; they can turn their rear flippers forwards in order to walk on land. This species is the largest type of sea lion, the males weighing up to 1, 100 kilograms. They are practically hairless except for a mane. Their meat is palatable and they form an important food source for eskimos. As a result, Stellar sea lions are extremely cautious of humans and will flee into the sea if approached. Photographed at Carmanah Point in British Columbia, Canada
