LM of head of Lyme disease tick, Ixodes ricinus
Lyme disease tick. Light micrograph of the tick Ixodes ricinus, principal vector of Lyme disease in Europe. At centre is the head of the tick with its barbed blood-sucking mouthparts (hypostome, white). The tick is common in Europe and attacks humans, domestic and wild animals. Ixodes ricinus carries the spirochaete bacterium Borrelia burg- dorferi, cause of both Lyme disease and a closely- related disease known as erythema migrans. Both diseases cause skin lesions, neurological and cardiac abnormalities and recurrent arthritis. In North America Lyme disease is transmitted by related ticks I.dammini and I.pacificus.
