The De Havilland D.H.88 Comet with two D. H. Gipsy Six engines was conceived as a racing aircraft.
In 1933 the Victorian Centenary air race from England to Melbourne, Australia was announced the idea for the Comet was born and three were built and entered.
The eventual winner of the speed prize was G-ACSS Grosvenor House, flown by C W A Scott and Tom Campbell Black, in 70 hours 54 minutes.

The De Havilland D.H.89a Dragon Rapide was first flown from Stag Lane by Hubert Broad

The De Havilland D.H.89a Dragon Rapide was first flown from Stag Lane by Hubert Broad on 17 April 1934; eventually 728 built for civil and military use seeing service in most parts of the world.
With Gipsy Queen engines and seating for 8-10 persons it gave many a person their first flight. Around 40 survive, with a few still flying today.
