Artwork of Phobos spacecraft nearing Phobos
Artist's impression of the Soviet Phobos spacecraft making its final approach to Phobos (lower right), the larger of the two small Martian moons. The spacecraft was launched in July 1988, & is due to make its encounter with Phobos in April/May 1989, after 120 days orbiting & observing Mars. It will then approach Phobos, descending to within 50 metres of the moon's surface before releasing two lander probes. Phobos is shaped like a potato & measures 27x21x19km. It orbits 6000km above the Martian surface. The view shows Mars in the distance. The dark spots at top centre are two of its large, extinct volcanos
