Nicola Bell with grandmother October 1987
Britain's first "coma baby", she was born after her mum had been artificially kept alive for five weeks.
Nicola made worldwide headlines when she born on October 19, 1986. Her mum Deborah, a 24-year-old typist, was in a deep coma after having a brain haemorrhage. She was kept alive in the intensive care unit of Middlesbrough General Hospital on Teesside for five weeks before medics decided it was safe to deliver Nicola. Deborah's life support was switched off two days later.
Born 10 weeks premature and weighing just 1lb 14ozs, Nicola was so tiny that she could fit into dad Ian's hand. She spent her first few months in hospital fighting for survival before she was well enough to go home
