Western Sahara Collection

Western Sahara is a disputed territory in North Africa, bordered by Morocco to the north, Algeria to the northeast, and Mauritania to the east and south. The region was colonized by Spain until 1975 when it withdrew its administration. Since then, it has been claimed by both Morocco and the Polisario Front independence movement. A ceasefire agreement was reached in 1991 between Morocco and Polisario with plans for a referendum on self-determination but this has yet to take place due to disagreements over voter eligibility. The UN maintains a peacekeeping mission in Western Sahara while tensions remain high between Moroccan authorities and Sahrawi activists calling for independence.
