Bissau Collection

Bissau is the capital of Guinea-Bissau, a small West African nation. Located on the Geba River estuary, it is a bustling port city and the center of commerce in the country. The population is estimated to be around 500,000 people and consists mainly of ethnic Fulas, Mandinkas and Balantes. Portuguese is the official language but many locals also speak Crioulo, a creole language derived from Portuguese. Bissau has an interesting history as it was once part of Portugal's colonial empire until 1974 when independence was declared. Today it remains one of Africa's poorest countries with high levels of poverty and unemployment. Despite this there are still plenty to see in Bissau including beautiful beaches, historic sites such as Fortaleza de São José da Amura and vibrant markets selling local crafts and produce.
