Lake Albert Collection

Lake Albert is located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Africa, and is part of the Albertine Rift, a branch of the East African Rift system. The lake has an area of about 2,200 square miles and is approximately 30 miles wide and 140 miles long. It lies at an elevation of 1,142 feet above sea level and has a maximum depth of about 300 feet. The lake's main tributaries are the Semliki River in Uganda and the Rutshuru River in DR Congo. Lake Albert contains many species of fish including Nile perch, tilapia, catfish and sardines as well as crocodiles and hippopotamuses. Its shores are home to many communities that rely on fishing for their livelihoods as well as tourism activities such as boat trips along its shoreline or visits to nearby national parks like Virunga National Park or Queen Elizabeth National Park. Lake Albert provides an important source of water for both countries it borders - Uganda and DR Congo - making it a vital resource for local people living near its shores.
